The Ligue 1 is the highest category of football in France . It began to be disputed on September 11, 1932 under the name National , before changing a single year later to Division 1 . The tournament continued to use that nomenclature until 2002, when it was modified to the current one.

It is made up of 20 teams. Each one faces twice, once as a local and another as a visitor, with the rest of the participants until completing the 38 stipulated days. The number of points scored determines the order of the ranking. If two clubs finish with the same score, goal difference and goals for are the first two tie-breaking criteria.

The top three of the Ligue 1 classification win a place in the Champions League . The fourth does the same with the Europa League . The fifth access to the Europa Conference League . The two teams with the fewest points are relegated to Ligue 2 . Since 2016-17, the eighteenth has played a play-off for a double game with the third of the second division of French football .

Previously, Ligue 1 used quite atypical formats as a bonus to reward the top scoring clubs. The rule stated that teams that scored three or more goals in a match received an extra point. He was looking to encourage offensive play, but was unsuccessful. In 2006, the organization brought this idea back with a ranking, but the bonuses became only economic.

More than 70 clubs have played the competition since its inception. The PSG is the only one that has not suffered a decrease due to the score achieved. It did lose the category administratively after its separation from Paris FC in 1972. More than 15 teams know what it means to be proclaimed champions of the tournament, but only eight have achieved it more than five times: PSG , Saint-Étienne, Olympique de Marseille, Monaco, Nantes, Olympique de Lyon, Girondins de Bordeaux and Stade de Reims .

Ligue 1 was the only one of the five major leagues in Europe that did not complete the 2019-20 season. The LFP indefinitely halted the competition on March 13 after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. On April 28, 2020, it was announced that the season would not resume, after the Government banned the holding of sporting events until September. PSG were declared champions by leading their pursuers by 12 points. Unlike what happened in other tournaments, the decision did not suspend relegation. Amiens and Toulouse were relegated to Ligue 2 despite their protests.
