Serie B Brazil is the second category in the country's professional league system. The tournament was founded in 1971 and is organized by the Brazilian Soccer Confederation (CBF). Since that year it has been held practically uninterruptedly, except for the period between 1973 to 1979 and in 1993.
The format and number of participants in the competition has varied over time. Currently, it is made up of 20 teams. Each one faces the other rivals twice, once at home in their stadium and once as a visitor in the opponent. The regulation includes a norm for beneficiaries of the soccer development of national players. Clubs can only use a maximum of five foreign players per game. Even so, there is no limit of players or Brazilians when it comes to forming and registering the squad.
At the end of the season, the order of classification is the decisive factor when it comes to making the various promotions and demotions. The first four classified go up to Serie A Brazil. The four teams with the fewest points go down in division and fall to Brasileirao Serie C. In the event of equality of score between two clubs, the main criteria to break the tie are the number of victories achieved and the difference in goals.
More than 30 teams have been proclaimed champions throughout the history of Serie B Brazil. The transfer between the different divisions makes it more difficult for the same club to be able to win the trophy on several occasions. Some of those who have achieved it are América Mineiro, Red Bull Bragantino, Coritiba, Goiás, Palmeiras or Paysandu. In terms of winded by states of the country, the Sao Paulo teams lead the ranking thanks to the more than nine titles they have achieved.
The CBF does not recognize as official several of the seasons of the competition contested. For this reason, the titles of the years 1986, 1987 and 2000 are not part of the historical record.
Villa Nova was the champion of the inaugural edition of Serie B Brazil. The tournament consisted of two group stages and, subsequently, two knockout rounds. In the semifinals, they defeated Ponte Petra thanks to the penalty shoot-out in the tie-breaker. In the grand final, he beat Remo with a score of 2-1 in the final match.
