The Copa MX is the most important direct elimination tournament in Mexico . The Mexican Federation of Football Association created it in 1932. In its first editions it had the category of amateur. It was not considered professional until 1942. It was the first competition to include representatives from different parts of the country and it had great prestige. He sought to crown the national champion by differentiating him from the local leagues.
His recognition was decreasing due to the constant problems and format changes (two-legged qualifiers, group stage with teams distributed according to their geographical location, conventional league, etc.) that he suffered. This ended up leading to the Copa MX being canceled indefinitely on several occasions: between 1976 and 1998, between 1992 and 1994 and between 1997 and 2012.
In May 2012, the president of the Liga MX announced his return. As in the league, it was decided that two editions per season would be played: Apertura and Clausura. In 2019, the structure was modified and started to be contested on an annual basis. The 2020-21 edition was canceled due to the reorganization of the national soccer calendar due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The number of participants and the structure of the Copa MX has varied considerably over the years, but always more oriented towards elimination than the traditional league. Currently, 27 teams compete each year in it, the top 15 teams in Liga MX excluding those who compete continentally and the top 12 in Liga Expansión MX . The clubs are divided into nine groups of three members and play four matches each. The champions and the seven best seconds advance to the round of 16. The qualifying rounds are resolved in a double game until the winner is established.
The inaugural edition was held between June and July 1933. It had the participation of ten teams. Four played a first preliminary round and the two winners entered to compete in the quarterfinals. The Necaxa won the tournament after leaving Club México, Asturias on the way and the Germania FV .
The Copa México Apertura 2012 was the first after the last indefinite break of the event. In the final played in a single match at the Marte R. Gómez Stadium, Dorados de Sinaloa won their first title by defeating the Correcaminos UAT on penalties 4-5.
More than 20 clubs have this trophy on their list. Three of them have managed to add five or more wounds: América, León and Puebla .
