League One is the third division of football in England. The championship started in 1920 under the name of Division Three. In 1921 it was renamed the Division Three North / South. In 1958 he returned to Division Three. Finally, before being known with its current nomenclature, in 1992 it was modified to Division Two. In 2004 the current format was introduced.

The league is made up of 24 teams that play against each other over a 46 game season. In case of equality of points, the general difference of goals is the first criterion established by the organization to tie the tie. At the end of the competition, the order of the classification dictates which are the clubs that change divisions. The first two advance to the Championship. The third, fourth, fifth and sixth qualify for a promotion play-off in which the third and last ticket to the second division of England is distributed. The last four are relegated to League Two.

From the 2012-13 season, a Financial Fair Play agreement was signed in all three divisions of the Football League. This decision sought to protect the stability of the clubs and try to make them financially self-sufficient. In League One, teams are only allowed to allocate a maximum of 60% of their turnover to salaries. If they do not comply, they are exposed to very severe disciplinary sanctions.

Luton Town was the first League One champion. In the 2004-05 campaign, the Hatters managed to score 98 points and ascended to the Championship alongside Hull City, as runner-up, and Sheffield Wednesday, as play-off winner. Torquay United, Wrexham, Peterborough United and Stockport County were the ones that lost the category and were relegated to League Two. Dean Windass and Stuart Elliott were the top scorers of that tournament with 27 goals.

The feat of the Premier League title won by Leicester City in 2016 has been one of the great stories in the world of football in recent decades. Their climb to glory began in the 2008-09 season, when they were first relegated to League One. The response was immediate and they bounced back by winning the title in just one year. Since then, the Foxes have never returned to the English third category. That team led by Nigel Pearson got 27 wins, 15 draws and two losses to finish with a figure of 97 points. Matty Fryatt was the star, scoring 32 goals across all competitions.
