The Liga NOS is the first division of football in Portugal. Its first edition dates from 1934 under the name of the Liga da Primeira Divisão Championship as an experimental league to test the structure. Until 1938, when it became known as the National Championship of Primeira Divisão, it was not official. In 1999 it changed its nomenclature to the current one.

The current format is made up of 18 teams. Until the 2004-05 season, the Liga NOS was made up of 16. Each club faces the rest of the rivals twice, once as a local and once as a visitor, until they have played 34 games. In case of equality of score between two teams after finishing the tournament, the first two tie-breaking criteria are the result of their individual duels and the goals scored away from home against their rival.

The champion, the second and the third classified obtain a place for the Champions League. The fourth qualifies directly for the group stage of the Europa League. The fifth and sixth with the most points get the ticket to the Europa Conference League. In the lower zone, the last two are relegated to the Portugal League 2. The penultimate disputes a play-off for the permanence against the third of the second category of Portuguese football.

Benfica, FC Porto and Sporting CP are considered the big three and the most important teams in Portugal. Except for Belenenses in 1945-46 and Boavista in 2000-01, they are the only three clubs that know what it's like to win the Liga NOS. The Águias have achieved it more than 35 times, the Dragões in more than 25 editions and the Leões more than 15 times. Generally, they are those who occupy the highest positions of the classification and those who represent the nation in UEFA competitions. They are the teams with the most fans and that get the best audiences in the broadcasts of their games on television. In addition, they are the only ones that have not suffered any downgrade.

In the United State matches can be watched live on GolTV.
