The Chilean First Division is the highest category of Chilean national football . In May 1933, the eight most important teams in the country at that time founded the Santiago Professional Football League (LFP): Unión Española, Colo-Colo, Morning Star, Santiago Nacional, Magallanes, Badminton, Audax Italiano and Green Cross . The organization was accepted and recognized by the Chilean Soccer Federation in June.

The format has been changing throughout its history, although since 2018 there has been no significant change. A single tournament is held per year in which all competitors face each other twice, once as locals and once as visitors. The one who has obtained the most points at the end of the season is crowned champion of Chile. The top three finishers get a ticket for the Copa Libertadores . The fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh win a place in the Copa Sudamericana . Regarding the relegation system, each season three teams are downgraded. The last ranked in the competition rankings and the coefficient of performance table are descended by division. The penultimate of these rankings, dispute a confrontation between them to determine which of the two remains in the PlanVital Championship.

At present, TNT Sports 2, TNT Sports HD and Estadio TNT Sports are the main channels that broadcast the PlanVital Championship on television in Chile . ChileVisión broadcasts openly one of the nine matches of each day. TV Chile is in charge of broadcasting several of the season's matches abroad for countries such as Argentina, United States, Colombia, Honduras, Peru, Uruguay or Ecuador among others.

Throughout history, more than 15 clubs know what it means to be crowned champions of the country. Three teams monopolize the majority of the titles of the competition surpassing the 15 wound each one: Colo-Colo. University of Chile and Catholic University.

Magallanes was the winner of the inaugural edition of the First Division of Chile . It was played between the months of July and November 1933. It had eight teams as participants and the format consisted of an initial league that pitted everyone against everyone for seven days. The first two classified disputed the grand final for the title. The San Bernando club defeated Colo-Colo in the final by a score of 1-2. The meeting was held at the Campos de Sports Stadium in Ñuñoa before 4,000 spectators.
