The Primera Iberdrola is the first division of women's football in Spain . Its foundation dates from 1988 and is managed by the Royal Spanish Football Federation . It is one of the main leagues in the European organization chart based on its UEFA coefficient. As established by the Higher Sports Council, since the 2021-22 season it is considered a professional sports competition.
It was born under the name of Women's National League and started as an amateur tournament. The Peña Barcelonista Barcilona, ??Barcelona, ??Sabadell, Espanyol, Puente Castro, Santa María Atlético, Parque Alcobendas and Vallès Occidental were the nine registered. Over the years, and despite economic difficulties, it grew both in importance and in participants. In 1996-97 it was renamed the Women's Honor Division and had 42 teams. This caused them to be grouped into four different groups depending on their geographical location.
Looking ahead to 2001-02, there was another change of the Female Super League name and format. It now had 11 teams and it was decided that the winner represented Spain in the Women's Champions League . In 2009, the RFEF increased the number to 24 competitors to encourage La Liga clubs to enter women's football . A structure that only lasted for two years, until the one that prevails today was established.
The Primera Iberdrola is made up of 16 clubs. They face each other in a round-trip format for 30 days. The three with the most points in the standings enter the Women's Champions League. The two worst go down to the Iberdrola Challenge . In the event of a tie on points between two teams, equality is broken in favor of the overall winner of the direct duels between the two.
The pandemic also hit the Primera Iberdrola 2019-20 hard. Only 21 of the 30 established days could be played. The federative body decided to crown Barcelona as champion, which when the tournament was stopped had an eight-point advantage in the standings over Atlético de Madrid . In addition, it was decreed that there would be no decreases, so the number of participants for the next edition rose to 18. For the 2020-21 season, the number of established decreases was four to return to the fixed number of 16.
Some of the players who have left a great mark in the competition are Natalia Pablos, Mari Paz Vilas, Vero Boquete, Jenni Hermoso, Nekane Díaz and Erika Vázquez .
